Leathernecks Set for Tennessee State on Senior Weekend

Last Time Out | Western Illinois fell twice to SEMO last weekend. WIU fought hard on Friday night, taking the Redhawks to five sets. On Saturday, WIU battled hard as they fell in four seats to SEMO. Keyana Cruse led the way with 24 kills. Annika Black and Grace Kremer dominated at the net as both of them totaled ten blocks.

First Time in a Decade | Western Illinois currently sits tied with Southern Indiana, SIUE, and UT Martin for 6th place in the OVC standings with a 6-8 record. WIU is looking to snap a ten-year drought of postseason play this season. The top eight teams make the OVC tournament, which takes place at the regular season championship school.

Senior Spotlight | This weekend will be the last time seniors Kennedy Bauer and Annika Black will be inside Western Hall to play for the Leathernecks. Bauer joined WIU in 2022, transferring from Lincoln Land Community College. Bauer has contributed 144 kills and 20 blocks in her two seasons in purple and gold. 

Annika Black joined WIU this season, transferring from Eastern Illinois. The southpaw has been a defensive asset at the net, totaling 36 blocks and contributing 52 kills in 17 matches this season.

OVC Rankings | Keyana Cruse continues to climb up the statistical leaderboards in the OVC. The junior from Bonner Springs, Kansas, currently ranks seventh in kills with 321, averaging 3.41 per set. Cruse also sits at seven points in total, as she has contributed 372.5 points this season, averaging 3.96 points per set.

Junior's Maggie Craker, Brittany Wulf, Karli Wenzel, and Julianna Schmidt also rank in the top 10. Craker sits at number five in assists with 871. Wulf ranks 4th in service aces with 26, Wenzel has 446 digs on the season, good enough for 6th, and Schmidt comes in at number 10 with 90 total blocks.

Scouting Tennessee State | Tennessee State comes into the weekend with a 2-12 in OVC play and 2-22 overall. Jayla Holcombe leads the Tigers with 232 kills. Kennedy Davis will return to Macomb for the first time since transferring to play the Leathernecks.
