Leathernecks Earn Win in Five Set Thriller

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois volleyball earned the weekend sweep against Little Rock as they took down the Trojans in five sets on Saturday (10/7) afternoon. The Leathernecks move to 4-2 in OVC play and 5-11 overall.

Set 1
WIU started hot from the service line. With the score deadlocked at one, Brittany Wulf served three consecutive aces, giving WIU an early 4-1 lead. Little Rock responded out of their timeout, cutting the deficit to one before Maggie Craker and Keyana Cruse had kills, pushing WIU's back out to three. Western Illinois held their three-point advantage until the Trojans tied the set at 11 midway through. Tied at 11, Wulf would have a kill to break the tie. Wulf would then head back to the service line, where she would continue her dominance with her third ace of the set in what would turn out to be a 4-0 Leatherneck run. WIU would hold off the Trojans for the remainder of the set as Annika Black's kill put the exclamation mark in a 25-18 set one victory.

Set 2
After starting ahead 1-0, WIU would find themselves down 4-1 after a Trojan run. WIU would claw its way back on the back of Wulf. Down 9-5, she would have back-to-back kills, putting WIU within striking distance at 9-7. Western Illinois cut the Trojan lead to one (10-9) after a Julianna Schmidt kill, but Little Rock responded with a 6-1 run to put breathing room between each team midway through the second set. Wulf ended the Trojan 4-0 run late, but Little Rock took the second set 25-16

Set 3
Western Illinois found themselves down early in set three. Down 8-3, WIU would use a mixture of Trojan attack and service errors, cutting the deficit to three at 10-7. Wulf would once again move WIU closer with a service ace, putting the score at 10-8. Little Rock increased their lead throughout the middle portion of set three, holding a 17-11 advantage. Cruse, Karli Wenzel, and Grace Kremer all assisted WIU in cutting the deficit to two (18-16). Cruse and Kremer had multiple kills, and Wenzel had a service ace. Little Rock pushed their lead back out to 23-18, forcing WIU to call a timeout. Kremer would have another kill out of the break, putting WIU within four. Kennedy Adair would the check in the game, propelling WIU on a 4-0 run with a service ace. Little Rock held off the Leathernecks, in the end, to take set three 25-22

Set 4
Deadlocked at one, two, and four, Western Illinois found themselves in a battle in set four. Down 10-7, WIU leaned on Cruse and Schmidt to help spark a 3-0 run, tying the set at 10-10. Teams would trade points to 16 before Black would go back-to-back with kills, putting the Leathernecks in front 18-16, causing Little Rock to use a timeout. After the timeout, Little Rock tied the match at 18 before Kaitlyn Wickersheim would serve a 4-0 run to go up 22-18. WIU held off the Trojans using another Wulf kill to seal the set 25-20.

Set 5
WIU fell behind early, 2-0. Keyana Cruse ended the run with a kill of her own. Teams traded points as they found each other tied at four. Two Trojan attack errors saw WIU go in front 6-4, forcing Little Rock to call a timeout. The timeout did not slow WIU, as Grace Ulatowski would have a kill to cap off the 4-0 run. Little Rock cut the lead to 7-5, but after a Schmidt kill, Wenzel would serve out the rest of the game as WIU took set five 15-5.

Wulf led the Leathernecks with a double-digit kill for the second day in a row at 17. She completed the double-double with 13 digs. Karli Wenzel had a team-leading 21 digs, as freshman Grace Ulatowski was behind her with 18. Maggie Craker was the offense facilitator with 38 assists. Grace Kremer and Julianna Schmidt had four block assists, helping WIU to eight total team blocks. Wulf had five of the nine service aces for Western Illinois.
