Late Penalty Proves Costly As Leathernecks Fall On Road

Western traveled to Little Rock for a Thursday night match that saw the Trojans win 1-0

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Western took its last road trip of the OVC regular season on Thursday, taking on the Trojans of Little Rock. Western came into the match looking for a win to greatly help its chances of making the OVC tournament, as prior to the match the Leathernecks sat in ninth place, as the top eight receive a spot in the conference's championship.

The Leathernecks played a strong first half, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Little Rock had the ball in the Leathernecks' third for a decent portion of the period, as the Trojans took six corner kicks in the half, all coming on the far side. Leatherneck keeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez made four saves in the period, and would finish with eight total in the match. Sachiko Gamo would try one from about twenty-five yards out on a free kick with 8 minutes left in the half, but the Trojan keeper would take care of it. Western made a couple nice defensive plays near the end of the half to go into the break tied at zero.

Early on in the second half, Western would get one of their best chances to take the lead in the match, with a pair of corner kicks around the 50th minute. As Gamo whipped in the ball from the far side, Little Rock keeper Marie Cimatti got a hand on it, but didn't make good contact and the ball nearly bounced in the net but a Trojan defender was able to knock it out of play. Emmy Ellington took a shot from the edge of the eighteen yard box on the second corner, but it sailed over the top of the crossbar. Western junior Kayla Turner would also take a shot from distance about fifteen minutes later but it was scooped up by Cimatti.

Later on in the 81st minute, the Trojans would send a ball into Western's box, which would lead into Rodriguez leaping to punch the ball out, but she ended up hitting and landing on Trojan Amaya Arias, who drew a penalty. Arias would convert the opportunity to score what would end up being the only goal of the match. Western was not able to get a goal scoring opportunity in the final eight minutes as Little Rock capped off its senior night with a 1-0 win.

The Leathernecks will finish out the OVC regular season on Sunday when the Leathernecks take on Lindenwood. Following the match, Western will honor its three graduating seniors, Audrey Narine, Maddie Hasken, and Malerie Rohweder.
