Leathernecks Fall to UT Martin

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois fell on Saturday (10/14) afternoon to UT Martin inside the Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The Leathernecks fell in four sets to move to 5-3 in OVC play and 6-12 overall.

SET 1
Keyana Cruse picked up where she left off last night with a kill to give WIU an early 1-0 lead. UT Martin battled back, extending their lead to three at 5-2. Julianna Schmidt cut the deficit to one with back-to-back kills at 7-6. Cruse would tie the setup with a kill at nine. UT Martin used a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to pull in front 16-12 before an attack error, and a Schmidt kill pulled WIU within two (16-14). WIU would scrape two more points in the set off of UT Martin attack errors before UT Martin took set one 25-16

SET 2
After falling behind 1-0, WIU used a 6-0 run off UT Martin's errors. Maggie Craker found the floor for a kill, helping WIU keep their five-point advantage 9-4. WIU kept the five-point distance throughout the middle of set two as Kennedy Adair and Schmidt traded kills with the UT Martin offense. WIU would see their lead increase above the five-point margin as Cruse and Schmidt combined for a block. WIU extended their lead to seven, 17-10. UT Martin used a 3-0 run to cut the Leatherneck's lead to four before a Cruse kill would force a UT Martin timeout. Out of the break, teams traded points before Annika Black killed, and Grace Kremer had a service ace, extending the lead back to seven (22-15). WIU fought off the Skyhawk's late rally, taking the second set 25-19

SET 3
Teams started the third set trading points as there were four ties in the first five points. Down 10-6, Black would get a kill, stopping a Skyhawks 4-1 run. Western Illinois would hang around, and Adair and Schmidt would have kills to keep the deficit at three midway through the set. A 4-0 run by the Skyhawks saw them pull in front 18-11 to gain separation. WIU would end the set on a 10-7 run but fall in set three 25-21.

SET 4
An early 3-0 run capped off by an Adair and Kremer block saw WIU in front early in the fourth set. UT Martin stayed around, tying the set at 8-8. UT Martin jumped in front midway through the fourth set with a 5-0 run. WIU battled back as Kremer brought WIU within one (15-14) with a kill before a UT Martin attack error had everything deadlocked at 15. After WIU tied the match, the Skyhawks used a 4-0 run to pull ahead. WIU would not be able to close the gap in the final parts as they fell in the final set 25-20

Julianna Schmidt led the Leathernecks with 13 kills, hitting the .300 mark. Keyana Cruse had 12 kills and 19 digs to reach the double-double mark. Maggie Craker had 35 assists to lead WIU. The Leathernecks had 12 blocks as a team.

Western Illinois heads into another three-game week with a mid-week matchup with Chicago State on Tuesday (10/17) before welcoming Southern Indiana next weekend.
