Leathernecks Finish Off 3 Match Homestand with Denver Match

Western will take on the Pioneers for the final time in Summit League regular season play on Saturday

Previous matchup: Denver won last year's matchup 4-2, and leads the all-time series by a comfortable margin. Western got its first win vs. Denver back in 2019, a match played in Macomb. In last year's matchup, current sophomore Adam Miller picked up a goal. 

Scouting the opponents: Denver has ranked as one of the better teams in the country for the majority of the 2023 season. They recieved a vote in last week's United Soccer Coaches poll, and is currently ranked 32nd according to NCAA's RPI metric. Denver has a 6-2-4 record, and is led by a pair of juniors in Sam Bassett and Oje Ofunrein, who have combined for 37 points on the year.

So far this season: The Leathernecks recently got their first Summit League win of the year on Saturday against St. Thomas, as three different players scored in the win. Western recently took a tough home loss to IUPUI, losing 2-1 in their last non-conference match of the year. Western currently holds a 2-9-1 record. 

Players to watch: Kyle Owen scored his first goal of the season in the match vs. IUPUI. Owen, a defender from Oklahoma City, has now scored eight goals during his five-year tenure at Western Illinois. Freshman Xavier Gagnon is the team's points leader, as he's netted two goals on the year. 

What's next: The Leathernecks will continue Summit League play next Wednesday, when Western will travel to take on Kansas City, before heading to Tulsa on Saturday play Oral Roberts.
