WIU Looks to Continue the Winning Ways in New Orleans

Last Week | Western Illinois headed down to Martin, Tennessee, for the Skyhawk Invitational. The Leathernecks went 1-2 on the weekend, dropping matches to Arkansas State (25-20, 9-25, 28-26, 25-27, 12-15) and host UT Martin (20-25, 12-25, 21-25). The Leathernecks picked up their first victory against Alabama A&M (25-21, 25-20, 25-23). WIU would keep the winning ways going with a mid-week matchup against cross-state rival Eastern Illinois (25-22, 25-21,25-16)

Young Talent | Western Illinois underclassman shined at the Skyhawk Invitational. Sophomore Brittany Wulf earned All-Tournament honors. She led the team in kills (37), service aces (11), and digs (30) on the weekend. Grace Nichols led the team in blocks with eight, with freshman Grace Kremer having six. On Tuesday, Elizabeth Ziegler finished with six kills well sophomore Maggie Craker had her third double-double on the season with 15 assists and 13 digs.

Serving Success | Western Illinois will go into the weekend ranked number one in the Summit League in service aces. The Leathernecks have 46 aces as a team averaging 1.7 aces per set. Brittany Wulf leads the Summit League individually with 14. Grace Nichols rounds out the top five with 11.

Scouting Texas Southern | Texas Southern comes into the weekend with an 0-4 record, most recently losing in straight sets to North Texas. Thalia Cordero Moreno leads the team with 23 kills averaging over 2.5 kills per set.

Scouting Southern University | Southern is still looking for their first win of the season. The Jaguars have started the season 0-6, winning just one set. Xaria Taylor leads the team with 29 kills averaging 2.38 per set.

Scouting New Orleans | New Orleans started the season with back-to-back wins. However, they have dropped their last four matches. The Privateers are the Southland Conference leaders in digs per set at 17.76

What's Next | WIU will finish its non-conference schedule at the Green Bay invite on Sept. 17.
