Set Pieces Hurt Leathernecks in Loss

Western Illinois fell to Loyola Chicago at home on Sunday.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois women's soccer played at home for the second time this season on Sunday (Sept. 4), falling 4-1 to the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago. Sunday's result ends Western's two-game unbeaten streak and moves the Leathernecks to 0-2-3 on the season.

With the same starting eleven that managed to hold Milwaukee scoreless on Thursday, it was the Leathernecks who struck first in this one. After a deflected shot on  a counter attack situation, Olivia Heinert took a touch and fired a right-footed shot to the far post, beating the Rambler goalkeeper and giving Western a one-goal advantage in the 17th minute. Loyola would get one back in the 36th but the teams were tied going into the break.

Loyola found its stride offensively in the second half, finding success in set piece situations; the Ramblers would score three in the final 45 minutes of action and the game went final at 4-1.

Bailey Burlingham led the team in shots with three (two on net) as Syndee Sagal and Amy Andrews both had two shots (one on target), while Alex Bassen and Olivia Heinert also put shots on frame. Henert's goal was the first of her Western Illinois career, as the freshman from Omaha, Neb., has started each of the team's five games this season while leading the team in minutes played (431). Isabel Navas Rodriguez made seven saves with six different Leathernecks playing the full 90 minutes.

Western Illinois women's soccer will hit the road for its next game, facing Northern Illinois on Friday (Sept. 9) in Dekalb before coming home for a Sunday (Sept. 11) matchup against Illinois State. Kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
