Next Stop Conference Play

WIU drops final non conference matches

GREEN BAY, Wis – Western Illinois dropped their final two non-conference games on Saturday (Sept. 17). The Leathernecks fell to the Drake Bulldogs in game one of the Green Bay Invitational in three sets (9-25, 23-25, 21-25). In match two, WIU fell to the Green Bay Phoenix in straight sets (19-25, 11-25, 18-25).

Drake came out rolling to start the first set. The Bulldogs opened the game on a 19-3 run to take early control. WIU tried to mount a comeback as they would go on a 4-2 run before Drake would take the set 25-9. Set two started out back and forth. Western would pull out to an early 4-1 lead. Drake would battle back, taking the lead throughout the middle of the second set. The Bulldogs would get all the way out to a five-point (16-11) before Western would use a 9-4 run to tie the match at 20. The Bulldogs would take the set, however 25-23. The third set saw Drake jump out in front and keep the lead throughout. WIU would see themselves get within one-point multiple times before Drake would take the final set 25-21.

WIU VS Green Bay
Green Bay opened the match on an 11-3 run to gain the early separation. Western would fight back as they would go on a 4-1 run to cut into the deficit and make it a 12-7 game. The Phoenix would reclaim control and take set one 25-19. Green Bay would use the momentum from set one and carry it into set two as they would open the set on a 12-4 run. The Phoenix would take that lead and not look back. They would take the second set 25-11. Both teams would battle to start the third set going back and forth. Western Illinois and Green Bay would find themselves knotted up at nine a piece before the Phoenix would pull away. Green Bay would take the final set 25-18.

Brittany Wulf led the team with 20 kills over the two matches. Elizabeth Ziegler was right behind her with 12. Maggie Craker led the team with 29 assists, and Jessie Connell had 20. Craker also led the team with 25 digs. WIU had eight blocks and four service aces as a team.

WIU will play in Macomb for the first time this season as Summit League players open up. The Leathernecks will take on North Dakota (Sept. 22) and North Dakota State (Sept. 24).
