Second-half goals fuel WIU win

Box Score MACOMB -- After a scoreless first half, the Western Illinois women's soccer team went to work and went to work in a hurry in the second half of Thursday's 4-0 exhibition home win over Quincy, scoring goals at a rapid pace.
In their second exhibition match of the preseason, the Leathernecks were finally able to put one in the net as Alex Bassen struck first at the 65:59 mark, scoring her goal off an Amy Andrews' assist. It would be the first of four goals for WIU, all coming within 20 minutes.
After recording the assist on the first goal, Andrews tallied a score of her own, putting the Leathernecks ahead 2-0, :34 after the Bassen goal. Andrews scored her second goal of the match at the 71:26 mark, dribbling through the left side of the Hawk defense and using her left foot to send a shot over the outstretched arm of the Quincy keeper.
Olivia Heinert capped Western Illinois' scoring, taking an Audrey Narine feed and making it a 4-0 match at the 84:06 mark.
The second-half scoring barrage came as a welcome relief for Western Illinois after the Leathernecks outshot Quincy 11-1 in the first 45 minutes, only to find the match even at 0-0.
In the second half, Western Illinois took better advantage of their chances, scoring four goals on eight shots.
Overall, the Leathernecks finished with 19 shots, 10 on goal in the contest while limiting Quincy to six shots, three on net.
Andrews led the way with seven shots, four on goal while Bailey Burlingham had five shots, two on net.
Myla Stewart recorded one save in the first half while Isabel Navas Rodriguez added a pair of saves in the second half.
The Leathernecks close the exhibition season on Saturday, hitting the road to take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Western begins the regular season on Thursday, August 18, visiting Eastern Michigan.
