Leatherneck softball drops a pair in Indiana

WIU back in action on Saturday morning


BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Illinois softball team opened play at the Hoosier Classic on Friday with a pair of losses.
The Leathernecks (3-10) dropped the opener of the series to Valparaiso 2-1, then fell in the afternoon contest to the hosting Hoosiers, 7-1.
WIU is back in action on Saturday with scheduled rematches against Valpo and Indiana.
 
GAME 1
Valparaiso 2, Western Illinois 1
The Leathernecks fell in their opening game of the weekend, dropping a 2-1 contest to Valpo on Friday morning.
Abby Carlin starred in the circle, striking out nine while allowing two runs on 10 hits.
Carlin also stranded 12 Valpo baserunners, getting out of jams throughout the game.
Savannah Rodriguez provided WIU's lone run, belting a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that cut the deficit to 2-1.
Jorja Hudson had two of WIU's six hits, raising her batting average to .353 this season.
 
GAME TWO
Indiana 7, Western Illinois 1
In the second game of the day, the Leathernecks would get runners on but could not capitalize, falling to the Hoosiers, 7-1.
Western left two runners on base in the top of the first and third innings and another runner in scoring position in the second.
The Leathernecks were able to break through against Indiana in the seventh, using three hits to score a run as Kaylee Ketcherside's single plated Abrianna Gracia.
Ketcherside added a pair of hits to go with her RBI while Georgia Rea had WIU's lone extra base hit, a double.
Savannah Rodriguez struck out two batters in four innings while Maddy Anderson fanned three in two innings of relief.
