WIU falls in final inning

Leathernecks lose to UNC after rally

For the second game in a row, the Western Illinois baseball team stormed back from an early deficit to take a late lead only to have Northern Colorado score a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Leathernecks trailed UNC 6-0 after three innings, but were able to chip away, taking an 8-7 lead in the top of the ninth.

But in the bottom of the inning, Northern Colorado scored a pair of runs, claiming the victory and earning a three-game Summit League sweep over the weekend.

After falling behind 6-0, WIU would use three hits to score four runs in the top of the fourth to get back into the game.

Nick Mitchell would get the scoring started, coming home from third on a wild pitch. Jack Sievers scored on an RBI single by Sam Maddox.

Maddox and Derek Botaletto each came around to score on a passed ball to make it 6-4.

Northern Colorado would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh but Gage Cruz once again made it a two-run game, blasting a solo home run in the top of the eighth, to make it 7-5.

In the top of the ninth, Western continued to plug away, getting runners on second and third with no one out.

Matt Santarelli's sacrifice fly made it a 7-6.

Down to their last out, the Leathernecks tied the game on a single by Dillon Sears that scored Botaletto.

WIU took the lead as Nick Mitchell sent a ball to centerfield that was misplayed and allowed Sears to score.

But in the bottom of the ninth, Northern Colorado scored a pair of runs on a groundout and a single to center.

Santarelli, Sears, Maddox and Botaletto each had a pair of hits while Santarelli, Sears, Cruz and Maddox each drove in runs.

Western Illinois is off until Friday, heading back on the road to take on Minnesota next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
