Leatherneck Tennis Handily Defeats St. Ambrose

The team’s first win of the season occurred in a 7-0 sweep.

Box Score CLINTON, Iowa | The Western Illinois women's tennis team swept St. Ambrose, 7-0, Saturday (Feb. 26) en route to its first win of the 2022 season. The Leathernecks handily defeated their opponent in all three doubles matches, cashing in on 6-0 scores, and singles play ran quite the same.

"This was a very good team win today," said head coach Shawn Hyden. "You could see the growth from the beginning of the spring to now, and it sets us up to begin conference play next week."

No. 5 Paige Grice didn't allow a single point in a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory, and No. 2 Aina Cortina-Pou surrendered the second-fewest in their 6-0, 6-1 success.

The Leathernecks entered the outing in search of their first doubles win, and left with so much more. All in all, it was a solid tuneup ahead of their Summit League opener versus South Dakota (March 5).
