Still in Search
With each appearance, the Leathernecks are steadily improving but still searching for their first doubles win. Lucky Kancherla and Aina Cortina-Pou have been mainstays in WIU's No. 1 slot, partnering all three matches this season.
Summit League Athletes to Watch
Lorena Castellanos represented the Leathernecks on the Summit League's preseason list. She garnered the accolade as an "athlete to watch" after co-leading WIU in single victories a season ago. The sophomore from Recife, Brazil, appeared in 11 matches during the 2021 campaign and earned her first collegiate victory in straight sets against St. Francis (Ill.)
The Squad
The Leathernecks return their singles' leaders in Castellanos and Agatha Carbonell, who each recorded a pair of successes in the 2020-21 season. The two also partnered for victory.
Aina Cortina-Pou and Lucky Kancherla were Western's most successful double with an overall record of 2-5.
