Leathernecks Fall on Senior Day

WIU falls in five set thriller

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois volleyball team fell to Kansas City in a five-set thriller on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon. The Leathernecks dropped sets one (14-25) and set two (13-25) before rallying to take sets three and four (25-22). The Leathernecks fell in the final set 14-16.

SET 1
The first started back and forth, with both teams deadlocked at one, two, and three. With the score tied at 3-3, Kansas City would go on a 3-0 run to pull in front 6-3. Aubrey Putman would bring WIU within one with a kill (7-6). Kansas City would use a 9-2 run through the middle of the set to take control 19-11. After A Grace Kremer kill, KC would end the set on a 6-2 run, taking set one 25-14

SET 2
Set two, as the first, started in a back-and-forth battle. WIU would tie the game at one, two, and three before Kansas City would pull ahead 5-3. The Leathernecks would use kills from Hailey Sperling and Elizabeth Ziegler to bring themselves within one (6-5). Both teams would keep trading points till a KC 7-1 run would give them control. Brittany Wulf would get a kill to end the Kansas City run and then follow that with an ace of her own. With the score 16-11, Kansas City would end the set on a 9-2 run to take set two 25-13

SET 3
Kansas City would use the momentum they gathered in sets one and two to jump to a 3-0 lead. Brittany Wulf would end the Kansas City run with a kill. Wulf's kill would get the WIU run going. Kennedy Bauer and Elizabeth Ziegler would team up for back-to-back kills before Wulf would kill, ace, and kill to help WIU get in front 6-4, forcing a Kansas City timeout. The Roo's would battle back, tying the match at seven, eight, nine, and ten. Bauer would give WIU back the lead with a kill. That kill was followed up by back-to-back errors by Kansas City, giving WIU the 13-10 information. KC would battle back once again to tie the match at 14. Both teams would trade points till the score was tied at 17. KC would get the following two points before Grace Kremer would bring WIU back within one. Down 19-21, WIU would call a timeout. WIU would get a service error by KC out of the timeout and then a Karli Wenzel ace to tie the match at 21. A couple more errors by Kansas City would have WIU jump back in front 23-22. Brittany Wulf would put the finishing touches on the third set with the final two kills.

SET 4
WIU would get out in front first in the third set. Jumping out to a 7-3 lead, the Leathernecks saw kills by Wulf and Ziegler. Kansas City would bring it back to a one-point game with a 3-0 run before Aubrey Putman would go around a block for the kill. Up 12-10, WIU would use a 4-0 run with kills from Putman and Wulf to increase their advantage to six (16-10). WIU would hold on to a three-point advantage until Kansas City used a little 2-0 run to pull within one at 20-19. A Kansas City service error and a Kennedy Bauer kill would force a KC timeout. Out of the timeout, Kansas City would have three attacking errors to help WIU take the set 25-22

SET 5
Kansas City was out in front early in set number five. Out to a 3-1 lead, they would tack on a kill to push their information to three. WIU would battle back as a 3-0 run that included kills by Elizabeth Ziegler, and Julianna Schmidt would bring the score to 6-5. Kansas City would respond with a 3-1 run of their own to pull back in front 9-6. Grace Kremer and Kennedy Bauer would again go back to back with kills to bring WIU within one. An attack error by KC would tie the match at nine, forcing a KC timeout. Out of the break, a KC attack error and kills by Wulf and Bauer would see WIU in front 12-9, forcing another KC timeout. After the second Kansas City timeout, they would go on a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead of 13-12. WIU would tie the match at 13 and 14 before falling 16-14.

Brittany Wulf led the way with 17 kills, Elizabeth Ziegler and Kennedy Bauer had nine, and Aubrey Putman had eight. Putman also contributed 19 digs in the afternoon. Karli Wenzel led the way with 21 digs, as Gabby DePersio was also in double digits with ten. DePersio dished out 21 assists well Jessie Connell handed out 20. WIU had ten team blocks, with Ziegler, Bauer, Schmidt, and Wulf at least having one solo block.
