Previous matchup: Western Illinois and Denver have played 14 times in program history, and their last matchup was Feb. 20, 2021. The Leathernecks lost that game 2-1, finishing the game with five shots (two on target) and Seanan Main made three saves.

Players to watch: True freshmen have played early and often this season, with Paul Nerb, Andrew Holley, Pall Ingvason, Jaylen Drummond and Benedikt Zechmeister all featuring at some point through the team's first six games. Zechmeister has started each game while Ingvason ranks fifth on the team in minutes played with 373.

Scouting the opponent: Denver is currently 4-2-1 on the season and coming off a 1-0 road loss at Gonzaga. They're 2-2-1 on the road, losing to the 'Zags and Oregon State, while defeating the likes of Air Force and Portland. Six different Pioneers have scored and Lukas Fisher leads the team with two assists.

Summit League Play: Saturday's game against Denver is the first of WIU's Summit League schedule. There are six matches in conference play with three taking place at home and three on the road. At the conclusion of the season, the Summit League's men's soccer Championship will be played in Macomb, with games scheduled for Nov. 11 and 13. More information will be made available at a later date.

What's next: After playing Denver at home, the Leathernecks will head to Louisville, Ky., for a matchup with the Louisville Cardinals in another non-conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
