After Saturday’s game against NIU, Western Illinois men's soccer will play their first conference matchup of the season.

Previous matchup: Western Illinois and Northern Illinois have played 29 times in program history, with the last matchup taking place on Sept. 28, 2019. Northern Illinois claimed a 2-1 victory that day with Ryan DeBois scoring the lone Leatherneck goal off an assist from Arian Mehrang.

Players to watch: True freshmen have featured early and often this season, with Paul Nerb, Andrew Holley, Pall Ingvason, Jaylen Drummond and Benedikt Zechmeister all featuring at some point through the team's first five games. Zechmeister has started each game and is currently sixth on the team in minutes played with 286.

Scouting the opponent: Northern Illinois is currently 5-1 on the season, with their loss coming on the road at Notre Dame. Nick Markanich leads the Huskies with six goals, and goalkeeper Martin Sanchez leads the team with 12 saves.
 
Summit League Play: Saturday's game against NIU is the last one before Summit League play begins. There are six matches in conference play with three taking place at home and three on the road. At the conclusion of the season, the Summit League's men's soccer Championship will be played in Macomb, with games  scheduled for Nov. 11 and 13. More information will be made available at a later date.

What's next: After playing NIU on the road, Western Illinois men's soccer will be at home for the following matchup to start conference play. Kickoff against Denver is scheduled for 1 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Sept. 25.
