Rincon Scores in Exhibition Win

The team will play one more exhibition before the regular season starts.

The Western Illinois University Men's Soccer team played in their second preseason exhibition on Thursday (Aug. 19), defeating the Hawks of Quincy University 2-0.

Though the Leathernecks came out strong and quickly pressured the Quincy back line, they were held scoreless in the first half. Through the first 45 minutes WIU recorded seven shots, including a Kyle Owen header that bounced off the woodwork in the sixth minute.

In the 60th minute Western Illinois took the lead on a stunning goal by Damian Rincon. Arian Mehrang got loose in the far corner, then hit a low cross to Rincon who popped it up and volleyed it home with the outside of his left foot.

12 minutes later, Cameron Territo played a long ball from the back line to a darting Kyle Owen, who was able to gain control and fire a right-footed rocket from the top of the box past the Quincy 'keeper to double the Western lead.

When the final horn sounded, the Leathernecks had taken 19 shots and 11 corner kicks, committing 16 fouls and drawing eight. Daisuke Otsuka led the team with 72 minutes played, followed by Paul Kirdorf (56), Paul Nerb (55) and Michael Howell (53).

Seanan Main played the first half in net, with Alex Flowers playing the second half and both goalkeepers recording two saves. 24 different players featured for the Leathernecks, including Pall Ingvason who made his season debut.

The team will now head on the road for their final exhibition matchup, playing against Chicago State on Friday (Aug. 20). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
