Leathernecks Close Out Season at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium

The program recognized six seniors in a pregame celebration.

MACOMB, Ill. – The 2021 season came to a close for the Western Illinois baseball team Saturday (May 22) in an 8-6 setback to Omaha. The Leathernecks battled until the final pitch, scoring two runs in the ninth inning with the help of graduating seniors making their last appearance in Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

There were five runs scored in the third inning, and with one swing of the bat, Luke Schwartz pulled his team within one. The 2-RBI double settled the score at 3-2 and further padded the senior's Leatherneck lead in extra-base hits (12). Unfortunately, the Mavericks tacked in two more runs in the next inning and maintained their lead the entire way by quieting a Western team pressured for a pair of one-out, bases-loaded situations in the fifth and eighth. Schwartz, Kevin Raisbeck, Trenton Bauer, Tyler Estes, Alex Dorethy, and Jackson Gray were each recognized in a Senior Day celebration, and four had a hand in pulling the game within grasp.

Estes crossed home plate for one of two runs in the sixth inning, while Bauer, Dorethy, and Schwartz joined forces for Western's last two scores in the ninth.

The Leathernecks concluded the season 11-29 with a 7-20 record in Summit League play.
