Leathernecks fall in Season Finale

WIU concludes the 2021 spring season.

Box Score Vermillion S.D. - In their final bout of the season, the Western Illinois women's tennis team (1-10, 0-5) dropped Saturday's (April 17) matchup against the South Dakota Coyotes (5-6, 3-1), 7-0. 

The Coyotes picked up an early doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots to take a 1-0 lead. Despite not finishing their match, Maria Rybka and Lorena Castellanos led their opponents 6-5 in No. 1 pairing.

Castellanos (No. 1) and Agatha Carbonell (No. 3) kept things close in their respective first sets of singles play, each dropping the early set 6-4. The freshmen weren't able to generate momentum heading into set number two, both falling 6-1 adding two more points to the South Dakota lead.

Aina Cortina-Pou (No. 2), Lucky Kancherla (No. 4), Mara Vidal (No.6), and Rybka (No. 5) each fell in straight sets in their final matchups of the season, securing a 7-0 Coyote win, their third consecutive League victory. 

Carbonell and Castellanos led the team in singles victories this season with two apiece. The dynamic duo of Cortina-Pou and Kancherla boast the most doubles victories on the season with two of their own.
