EIU Holds on 2-1 in Season Finale.

Western Illinois concluded the season in a 2-1 loss at Eastern Illinois on Saturday (April 17).

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Despite Western Illinois outshooting and scoring a late second-half goal, the Eastern Illinois Panthers held on 2-1 in the season finale on Saturday April 17).

The Leathernecks controlled the offensive side of the game as they outshot EIU 18-7 and owned the corner kick margin 8-4. Six different players had multi-shot games led by Kyle Owen and Daisuke Otsuka with three.

Both sides entered half scoreless as Western had three corners in the first 11 minutes, and Kory Soulinthavong had a breakaway, but his shot was saved.

Eastern responded to start the second set of 45 and scored goals in the 46th and 50th-minute marks to take a 2-0 lead.

After the host scored, WIU outshot the Panthers 14-4 in the second half en route to a season-high of 18 shots as 12 were on frame. The Leathernecks had great looks highlighted by Owen's header that skipped off the crossbar in the 78th minute.

Western finally found the back of the net in the 90th minute as Otskua connected in the box that sailed past the EIU goalie. He becomes the ninth different Leatherneck to have scored this spring.

The goal came with 47 seconds left on the clock, but Eastern held on to the late WIU push.

Western Illinois will now turn its attention to the 2021 season after the 2020 season was delayed to this spring. The Leathernecks, who were the 2019 regular-season co-champion, will retain the right to host the 2021 Championship in the fall.
