First Serve | The Western Illinois women's tennis team closes out their 2021 campaign on Saturday (April 17) when the team travels to South Dakota in search of their first Summit League win of the season against the Coyotes.

Last Time Out | The Leathernecks last took the court on Sunday (April 11) against Omaha after their Tuesday (April 13) matchup against Eastern Illinois was canceled.

The Mavericks earned doubles victories in the No. 2 and 3 doubles to secure a 1-0 advantage. Despite not finishing their match, Maria Rybka and Lorena Castellanos led their opponents 5-4 in No. 1 pairing.

Castellanos (No.1) started strong in singles play, battling in her first set and getting the 7-6 (5) win. Her opponent responded and took set two (6-1), forcing a third set. Neither Castellanos nor her opponent went down without a fight, but it was Castellanos who emerged victorious with a 10-7 set victory and a point for the Leathernecks.

In the No. 3 spot, Agatha Carbonell's day went in a very similar fashion to her fellow freshman. After dropping her first set, 6-4, she turned the tables and took the next two sets, 6-4 and 10-7. This marked the fourth time this season the freshman has gone to three sets and her second singles win of the year.

Rybka (No. 5), Aina Cortina-Pou (No.2), Mara Vidal (No. 6), and Lucky Kancherla (No.4) all fell in straight sets, securing the 5-2 victory for Omaha.

Plenty of Firsts | The Leathernecks 7-0 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) on Valentine's Day marked the first win of the season for Western and firsts for a few team members. The match was the first win for head coach Shawn Hyden at WIU, and it featured the first career wins for Lorena Castellanos, Aina Cortina-Pou, Agatha Carbonell, and Maria Rybka.

Scouting the Coyotes | The Coyotes began Summit League play back on March 13, dropping their opener against Kansas City 4-3. Since then, it has been pretty smooth sailing for South Dakota. They dropped their final non-league matchup of the season 5-2 on March 26 against Creighton. Currently, USD boasts a two-game winning streak after beating Omaha 4-3 and Oral Roberts 6-1.
