Tennis Tangles with Bradley in Tuesday Showdown

First Serve | The Western Illinois women's tennis team faces off against in-state rival Bradley with an afternoon matchup on Tuesday (March 9) at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out | The Leathernecks have had some time off since their last matchup on February 27, a doubleheader against Youngstown State and Saint Francis in Youngstown. The Leathernecks earned a default victory in doubles at No.3 against Saint Francis before securing the point with a 6-2 victory by Aina Cortina-Pou and Lucky Kancherla at No. 2. In singles, Maria Rybka earned a default victory at No. 6 to put the Leathernecks up 2-0 over the Red Flash. Agatha Carbonell dropped her first set at No. 3 6-4 before tying things up with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Despaite the hard-fought second set, Carbonell dropped the third set 6-1. Lorena Castellanos (No. 1), Kancherla (No. 4), and Nikhita Simhambhatla (No. 5) all fell in straight sets to give the Red Flash a 4-2 lead. Cortina-Pou (No. 2) was edged 6-7 (5), 3-6, closing out the 5-2 victory for Saint Francis. Western was swept 7-0 by Youngstown State later in the day. 

Plenty of Firsts | The Leathernecks 7-0 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) on Valentine's Day marked the first win of the season and also marked firsts for a few members of the team. The match was the first win for head coach Shawn Hyden at WIU. It featured the first career wins for Lorena Castellanos, Aina Cortina-Pou, Agatha Carbonell, and Maria Rybka.

Scouting the Braves | The Braves currently hold a two-match winning streak after beating Chicago State (Feb. 27) 7-0 and SIUE (Feb. 26) 6-1. The Leathernecks last faced off with Bradley on February 23, 2019, in a 4-0 Braves victory. The two teams were scheduled to meet last season before the matchup was canceled.
