Leathernecks and Aces Split Doubleheader

Toby Allred knocked a two-out single to earn WIU the split in game two.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Western Illinois (2-5) and Evansville split the Saturday (March 6) doubleheader, 2-3 and 7-5, at Charles H. Braun Stadium.

"After putting ourselves in good positions to score runs all week it was good to see Trenton Bauer and Toby Allred come up with big hits to drive in runs," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "We had strong pitching and solid defense all day - Jace threw extremely well in the first game and Chandler gave us another strong start in the second game to get the ball to our closer, Austin Edwards."

Game 1 | WIU 2, Evansville 3

After the Purple Aces tacked on two in the first inning, Jace Warkentien found his groove and retired the opposition in order four consecutive frames. The lefty tossed five straight consecutive shutout innings and added two strikeouts.

WIU tied it (2-2) in the second inning from a two-out single into right off the bat of Adam Juran. Chase VanDerGinst hit a double in the seventh but was left stranded.

UE walked it off in the seventh on a two-out single.

Game 2 | WIU 7, Evansville 6

The Western bats clicked right away to start game two as they scored five runs in the first two frames. Two Evansville miscues, followed by a single from Chase VanDerGinst and a two-out double from Trenton Bauer completed the push.

In the twin-bill, the Aces used the long ball twice to tie (5-5) with a two-out, three-run shot in the fourth. Chandler Fochs (1-1) picked up for strikeouts en route to his first win of the season.

Western Illinois mirrored the host's two-out hitting, and Toby Allred smacked a single into left field to bring in Kory Olsen and Chase VanDerGinst to push out 7-5. Both Allred and Bauer finished with 2 RBI.

Austin Edwards struck out the first two batters he faced and completed the final frame to earn his first career save.

The Leathernecks and Aces conclude the weekend series tomorrow on ESPN+ at 1 p.m.
