First Serve | After their home opener on Saturday (March 20), the Western Illinois women's tennis team hits the road again this Friday (March 26) as they travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to continue Summit League play against the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota.

Last Time Out | In doubles, the duos of Lucky Kancherla and Lorena Castellanos and Maria Rybka and Mara Vidal each lost their matchups 6-2 to give the Roos an early 1-0 lead. This marked the first appearance of the season for Vidal.  Nikhita Simhambhatla (No. 6), Kancherla (No. 5), Castellanos (No. 1), Aina Cortina-Pou (No. 3), and Rybka (No. 4) lost in straight sets.

Agatha Carbonell once again fought hard to the end. The Valencia, Spain native, took an early lead, winning the first set 6-3. Riddhi Sharma, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, took set two over the Leatherneck freshman, 6-1. This marked the third time this season Carbonell had played in a third set. The two athletes put it all on the line, with Sharma getting the deciding victory, 10-6, to secure a clean sweep for the first-place Roos.

Double Trouble | The duo of Aina Cortina-Pou and Lucky Kancherla were able to run away with a 6-2 win on March 9 in the No.2 spot against Bradley. The win marked the second doubles victory of the season for the pair, leading the Leathernecks in that category.

Plenty of Firsts | The Leathernecks 7-0 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) on Valentine's Day marked the first win of the season for Western and firsts for a few members of the team. The match was the first win for head coach Shawn Hyden at WIU, and it featured the first career wins for Lorena Castellanos, Aina Cortina-Pou, Agatha Carbonell, and Maria Rybka.

Scouting the Fighting Hawks | It has been a while since North Dakota was out on the court. The Fighting Hawks doubleheader on Friday (March 19) was cancelled, meaning the team hasn't played since their 6-1 victory over North Carolina Central on March 17. The group opened Summit League play all the way back on March 15, a 5-2 win over Oral Roberts. The duos of Sapir Sela and Andrea Jansson and Kaede Amano and Allie Ochotorena made quick work in doubles play, 6-0 and 6-1, respectively. Ochotorena, Jansson, Amano, and Nina Zdravkovic earned straight-set victories in singles play against the Golden Eagles.

Up Next | Western Illinois continues their road trip as they travel to take on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on April 3 at noon.
