Tennis Closes In-State Stretch at Illinois State

First Serve | The Western Illinois women's tennis team returns to the court for the first time since Feb. 14 with their third straight in-state contest with Illinois State on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at 11 a.m.

Plenty of Firsts | The Leathernecks 7-0 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) on Valentine's Day marked the first win of the season for Western, and also marked firsts for a few members of the team. The match was the first win for head coach Shawn Hyden at WIU and it featured the first career wins for Lorena Castellanos, Aina Cortina-Pou, Agatha Carbonell, and Maria Rybka.

Last Time Out | The Leathernecks traveled to St. Francis (Ill.) on Feb. 14 to face off against the Fighting Saints. In doubles, Lorena Castellanos and Agatha Carbonell got the ball rolling with a quick 6-1 win at No. 3. The duos of Lucky Kancherla and Maria Rybka and Aina Cortina-Pou and Nikhita Simhambhatla secured the first point with each pair earning a 6-3 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. The Leathernecks would go on to sweep singles play to earn a 7-0 shutout for their first match win of the season. 

Scouting the Redbirds | Illinois State (6-4) heads into Wednesday's match on a four-game winning streak. The Redbirds are coming off a 9-0 victory over Depauw on Sunday (Feb. 21). ISU defeated Summit League member Kansas City 4-3 on Jan. 31 and finished the 2019-2020 season 6-7, including a 6-1 victory over the Leathernecks. 

Up Next | Western Illinois travels to Youngstown, Ohio this Saturday (Feb. 27) for a doubleheader against St. Francis (10 a.m.) and Youngstown State (1 p.m.).
