Nine Leathernecks Make Debuts, WIU Falls 2-0

Freshman Isabel Navas Rodgriuez had nine saves in her Leatherneck debut.

BURLINGTON, IOWA - Nine different Leathernecks made their debut for Western Illinois (0-1-0, 0-1-0) in a 2-0 loss to Denver (1-1-0, 1-0). 

After Denver got on the board five minutes into the season opener for a 1-0 lead, Isabel Navas Rodriguez shut the preseason favorites out for the rest of the half to notch six saves. She added three more in the second half for a total of nine.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 after tapping in a bouncing ball in the box in the 55th minute. 

WIU generated some chances in the second set of 45 as Bridget Schuler had a team-high three shots. 

Nine players made their debuts in the Purple and Gold - Navas Rodriguez, Ella Kiely, Emma Brinkmann, Bailey Burlingham, Angie Knies, Audrey Narine, Maddie Hasken, Alex Bassen, and Grace McLaughlin. 

Western Illinois takes on Denver again on Sunday (Feb. 14) at 5 p.m.
