Women’s Basketball Takes Down Prairie Stars in Final Exhibition

One last test before the regular season!

MACOMB, Ill. - Opening up a week full of significant opportunities, Western Illinois women's basketball started with its second and final exhibition outing of 2021-22 at home. Hosting Illinois Springfield, the Leathernecks used a big second quarter to finish in a comfortable 87-60 decision.

The first quarter was highlighted by the sharpshooting of sophomore Mallory McDermott, who tallied eight of her team-high 15 points during the period (on 3-4 shooting). Leading 23-15 after the first ten minutes of work, Western upped its offensive tempo to lead by as many as 20 points at one point before halftime arrived.

Some traded possessions began to unfold in the third quarter. Still, WIU steadied its poised play to stay ahead by a considerable lead, as a handful of different players contributed to the team's offensive attack. Additionally, a collective focus on defense remained consistent throughout the final 20 minutes, highlighted by Evan Zars' three blocks and three steals from Danni Nichols and Elizabeth Lutz.

Lutz filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Zars added 13 points of her own, while Nichols (12) and Jada Thorpe (10) rounded out a quintet of Leatherneck double-digit scorers. Nichols also pieced a well-rounded performance to include eight rebounds and five assists. Alissa Dins and Anna Deets were spark plugs off of the bench with seven points apiece. As a team, Western shot over 47% from the field and had eight blocks.

The official season opener is next for WIU, as the team opens at Notre Dame on Thursday (Nov. 11).
