Leathernecks Fight, Unable to Turn Corner in Vermillion

The Leathernecks put forth quite the effort in a 3-0 setback to South Dakota.

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Western Illinois volleyball team met South Dakota inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Saturday (Oct. 19), and the two put on quite a show. The decision may have favored the Coyotes 3-0 (14-25, 20-25, 18-25), but the final score was not an adequate representation of the tenacity or fight shown by WIU.

"I was glad to see our team keep fighting and improve through the match," said head coach Ben Staupe. "We out-hit a very good South Dakota offense in the third set, but inconsistency on serve receive hurt us often."

That Fighting Leatherneck spirit was on full display in the second and third sets, as the team increased its offensive production from the opening frame while maintaining a close score. The latter sets combined for 13 ties, and interestingly, 17-all marked the final impasse in both. A service ace by Aubrey Putman put WIU up, 3-1, in the second for its largest (and lone) advantage of the afternoon. And while it threatened on several occasions, Western was unable to turn the corner down the stretch. The 'Yotes secured the sets on 4-0 and 6-0 runs.

Putman led the team with 12.5 points on 11 kills, an ace, and an assisted block and contributed five digs, while Kennedy and Kalynn Davis were forces at the net. The sisters assisted on three blocks each and also added 8.5 and 7.5 points, respectively.

A Thursday night meeting with Kansas City (Oct. 14) marks the start of a four-match homestand for the Leathernecks that includes Oral Roberts (Oct. 16), Omaha (Oct. 21), and Denver (Oct. 23).
