WIU Falls to First-Place Coyotes

Western Illinois dropped a contest with the reigning Summit League champions on Friday (Jan. 22).

MACOMB, Ill.: The Western Illinois women's basketball team (3-12, 2-5) fell to the first-place South Dakota Coyotes (9-3, 5-0) 56-73 on Friday (Jan. 22).

This week's Summit League player of the week, Evan Zars, recorded her third straight double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds.), and the conference leader in steals, Elizabeth Lutz, set a new career-high with seven swipes. The mark also is the most by a Summit player this year.

The first quarter of action featured the three-ball. Back-to-back trifectas from Danni Nichols and Lutz tied it 8-8 (6:22). Then another shot from deep by Lutz gave WIU an 11-8 into the media timeout.

South Dakota used its own shot from deep to tie it again, 13-13 at 2:01. Both sides entered the second tied 15-15 after a well-executed inbounds play set up Grace Gilmore for the late bucket.

The second quarter witnessed four consecutive lead changes. USD grabbed control of the momentum with a 10-2 run to enter halftime ahead 41-31.

Western brought the deficit to nine on multiple occasions in the third, but a 13-0 Coyote run helped the reigning Summit League champions pull away and take game one.

Game two is set for tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. and will serve as the #BeatType1 game as The Summit League, and Sanford Health are once again teaming up to bring awareness to Type 1 diabetes during the 2020-21 basketball season.
