Leathernecks Unable to Take Advantage of Opportunities vs. UNA

Western loaded the bases in back-to-back innings, but only scored two runs.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Western Illinois softball loaded the bases twice, but couldn't take full advantage of its opportunities in a 4-2, tournament-ending loss to North Alabama on Sunday (March 1).

Abby Carlin received the starting nod in the circle, and her third appearance in the Blues City Tournament started strong.  She hadn't allowed UNA a single hit or score through 2.2 innings, but three straight hits and an error allowed the Lions to leave the frame up by two.

UNA doubled its advantage to 4-0 in the next inning, before things started brewing for the Leathernecks. Their patience at the plate paid off in loaded bases in both the fifth and the sixth, and with the exception of Meghan Henson's leadoff single, every other Leatherneck reached base on a walk or an error.

With just one out on the board in both occasions, the Lions escaped nearly unscathed, surrendering a run in each frame.

In total, Western left 11 runners on base. Carlin was credited with the loss, and Maddy Anderson pitched 3.1 innings in relief.

Next weekend, the Leathernecks remain in-state for a five-game swing in the Saluki Invitational (March 6-8). Southern Illinois will play host to Western, DePaul, Northern Illinois, and IUPUI.
