Home Opener Highlights Weekend Action

Western Illinois is set to host its home opener against Illinois State on Sunday (Dec. 13) after a road tilt at Southeast Missouri on Friday (Dec. 11).

Tip-Off | The Western Illinois women's basketball team is set to host its home opener against Illinois State on Sunday (Dec. 13) after a road tilt at Southeast Missouri on Friday (Dec. 11).

Headlines 
  • Last year's Summit League Newcomer of the Year, Evan Zars, is the only player in the league to be averaging a double-double - 11.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg. She also leads the conference in double-doubles (2), rebounds per game (10.3), total rebounds (41), blocks per game (2.5) and total blocks (10). 
  • Junior Danni Nichols has ended in double-figures each game this season to average 11.5 points per game. 
  • Western recently completed three games in three days, which featured opponents - Northern Illinois (Dec. 5), Eastern Illinois (Dec. 6), and Indiana State (Dec. 7). 
  • Freshman Anna Deets is second in the Summit League with nine three-pointers. The guard has hit at least two three-pointers in all four games this season. 
  • Sunday's game against Illinois State will serve as the 2020-21 home opener for WIU, under head coach JD Gravina, the Leathernecks are 9-0 in home openers.

At this time, in accordance with state and local guidelines, fans are not permitted to attend any event held inside Western Hall. Current season ticket holders maintain the right to their seats, and tickets will be rolled over to the next season.

Fan Cutouts Coming to Western Hall
This year, WIU Athletics will be introducing fan cutouts for all Western Hall sports. Be a part of the fun, dress up in your best Leatherneck gear, and get creative with your cutout submissions! Western Hall will even have a "Rocky and Friends" section, so let's fill it up with his furry and feathered friends. With the holidays right around the corner, what a great gift for friends and family! All cutouts will be available for pick-up or can be shipped at the end of the season. Last Time Out | The Leathernecks concluded their third consecutive game in a loss (88-61) to Indiana State on Monday (Dec. 7) night. ISU opened  the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Western Illinois struggled to find its footing offensively, shooting 26.1 percent from the field and ISU didn't slow down in the second half to defeat WIU for the first time since 2002

Anna Deets notched the first field goal for the Leathernecks with a three-pointer just under a minute in the first quarter. The freshman ended with 11 points for a career-high. Fellow newcomer Mallory McDermott provided a spark off the bench in the fourth quarter as she started her own 11-point burst to finish in double-figures for the first time. 

Up Next | WIU makes up its original season opener at Bellarmine on Saturday (Dec. 19), then heads to Iowa on Tuesday (Dec. 22).
