Western Topped in Home Opener

The Leathernecks were defeated by Illinois State 85-55 on Sunday (Dec. 13).

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's basketball team (0-6) was topped in its home opener 85-55 against Illinois State (2-0) on Sunday (Dec. 13).

"We are really struggling offensively," head coach JD Gravina said. "You put ISU offense in a position where they can play with confidence because they are getting stop after stop, things get tougher and tougher on our end."

In the first quarter, Western owned a quick 11-7 advantage at the first media timeout (4:07) led by Evan Zars (seven points) and Grace Gilmore (four points). The in-state rival responded and closed the quarter on an 11-0 that turned into a 20-0 run in the second quarter and a 38-21 lead at the half.

Zars added a block in the first quarter that moved her sixth all-time in program history with 60. She now trails Stephanie Lovingood (2005-08), who sits at fifth all-time at 73.

The Leathernecks trimmed the Redbird lead to 13 (42-29) behind an Elizabeth Lutz corner three at the 5:39 mark, but the visitors used a 14-5 run to enter the final frame 56-34 and hold on for the victory.

Gilmore finished a perfect 8-8 from the line for a team-high 16 points, and redshirt-freshman Kennedy Flanagan scored her first career field goal in the fourth quarter. The loss snapped a nine-game win streak in home openers under Gravina.

WIU makes up its original season opener at Bellarmine on Saturday (Dec. 19), then heads to Iowa on Tuesday (Dec. 22).
