NIU Golden Goal Counters DeBois Acrobatics

Ryan DeBois scored his first career goal to tie the match 1-1

MACOMB, Ill. - Ryan DeBois came off the bench huge as he scored his first career goal to tie the Saturday (Sept. 28) tilt for the Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-9-0), but a Northern Illinois (4-4-1) golden goal was the difference in a 2-1 defeat in overtime. 

"Really proud of the effort and attitude today," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We are improving with every match. Obviously I would prefer that we got a result from the game but we gave ourselves a chance today."

With the end of the first half insight, both Arian Mehrang and DeBois provided a spark for the WIU attack to earn first career marks. Mehrang floated a ball to DeBois inside the middle of the box and struck the ball into the bottom right corner on an acrobat kick in the 43rd minute for his first career goal. The assist was awarded to Mehrang to tie for second on the team. 

The golden goal came near the end of the first overtime after the Huskies forced a Leatherneck turnover. Anthony Markanich sent a long ball to his brother Nick Mrkanich ('98) who took a couple of touches and placed the ball in the top left corner. 

The Leatherneck and Huskies tied each with 14 shots, Daisuke Otsuka (3) and Enric Ferrer (4) led the pack.

NIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a ball that was played into the box that was tapped in the left corner and just out of the reach of Tim Trilk

The Purple and Gold conclude non-league play under the lights at SIUE on Tuesday (Oct. 1) at 7 p.m.
