Redbirds Sneak in Late Goal

Palmiero Herrera totaled seven saves, now six away from fourth all-time.

NORMAL, Ill. - The Western Illinois (2-4-1) women's soccer team held Illinois State (4-4-0) scoreless for nearly all game, but a late Redbird goal made the difference is a 1-0 loss on Sunday (Sept. 15).

Illinois State started the afternoon tilt with totaling six shots on goal in the first half, but Ines Palmiero Herrera denied every opportunity to keep it scoreless. The senior stopped one more shot in the second half to total seven for the second time this season. She now holds a career mark of 213 saves and is six away from tying Katherine Hill (1997-98) for fourth all-time.

The Redbirds found the only goal of the game at the 79-minute mark by Kate Del Fava for her ninth of the season, which ranks second in the NCAA.

Natalie Nagle nearly tied the matinee in the 81st minute, but her shot was wide right. Zoe Clarke also fired two shots, and Jenna Lundgren had one.

The Leathernecks open a five-game homestand starting with Drake on Friday (Sept. 20) and Northern Iowa Sunday (Sept. 22).
