Tennis Concludes Second Fall Test

Ballesteros and Simhambhatla both fall in the semifinals

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - The Western Illinois Tennis team concluded their second test of the fall at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 14).

"We continued to learn a lot about ourselves as a team today, "head coach Shawn Hyden said. "The team is continuing to grow and improve each time out."

In the Singles A bracket both Laura Ballesteros and Nikhita Simhambhatla won their opening matches of the day. Ballesteros rallied after a first set lost to win 7-5 and 10-7. The senior then was just outlasted 6-4, 4-6 and 8-10 in the next match in the semifinals. Simhambhatla also won her matchup to start the morning 6-2, 6-1 for her second career win. The freshman then fell in two sets 6-2, 6-1 to conclude her run.

Both Grace Stevens and Ericka Dawson rounded out singles play for the Leathernecks in the Singles B bracket. Dawson continued her strong performance with a 6-1, 6-3 win to start play, but had to withdraw in the next match. Stevens fell in two sets in her lone match of the day.

The Leathernecks travel to Eastern Illinois for the third fall tournament of the season on Friday (Sept. 20).
