MACOMB, Ill.
Shots came at a premium for the Western Illinois women's soccer team as it shutout the Quincy Hawks, 2-0, to wrap up exhibition play on Friday (Aug. 16).

"Good effort from the entire squad. Two games in three days is difficult, and I thought we handled it pretty well," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We created some quality chances, so that is encouraging. Our backline was very good on the day and deserved the shutout."

It took just 10 minutes into the final preseason test before the Leathernecks found the back of the net. Natalie Nagle buried the ball off a through ball to the top of the box from Emily Bollman at the 11-minute mark.

Between the pipes, Ines Palmiero Herrera was tested in the first half but saved both shots fired by the Hawks. The backline responded to only allow one more shot in the last 45 minutes. The Leathernecks didn't allow any goals in both exhibition matches compared to scoring a total of seven.

The Purple and Gold added an insurance goal late in the second half when Lynette Hawkins placed a perfect long ball into the box, and Zoe Clarke beat the keeper to go up 2-0.

Western Illinois looks ahead to the regular season and home opener against Missouri State at 5 p.m. on Friday (Aug. 23) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
