Leathernecks Drop First Extra-Inning Ballgame of the Year

Western was previously 3-0 in extra inning games.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois' baseball team dropped its first extra-inning game of the year in a 4-3 decision against Omaha Friday (May 10). The Leathernecks were previously 3-0 in extras and fell in the 10th frame after the Mavericks converted an error into a run.

It was a scoreless, one-hit ballgame heading into the fifth inning where Omaha broke up the quietness on unearned runs. CJ Schaeffer Jr. was responsible for the first hit of the afternoon, a single to left center in the opening frame, and lefty Jace Warkentien took care of the rest. He pitched six innings with four hits and no earned runs in the no-decision before Austin Emanuel took the reins in the top of the seventh.

While the Mavericks struck first, the lead didn't stretch beyond the end of the fifth inning as Diego Munoz sent a 2 RBI home run down the left field line to even the score. Things were knotted once again after Deion Thompson recorded a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and Western left the winning run stranded at third base at the end of the ninth.

Mavs were standing at first and second base when a fielding error allowed the led runner to round the corner to home.

Western and Omaha continue the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
