Compton Lifts Western to Another Series Win

The Leathernecks clipped the Mastodons, 3-2 and 5-4 on Friday (April 26)

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois (16-19, 8-6) softball team won its third straight Summit League series after edging Purdue Fort Wayne (8-35, 3-14) twice in a doubleheader on Friday, April 26. Aly Compton delivered the walk-off hit to clinch the game two victory and a five-game winning streak.

Game One (Western Illinois 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 2)

The Leathernecks got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first. Payton Abbott doubled then Danielle Olson singled up the middle and the Mastodon centerfield bobbled the ball on the pickup allowing Abbott to score.

Purdue Fort Wayne responded to take the lead in the top of the third inning. Lauren Watson reached on an infield single to bring in the game-tying run. With runners at the corners, a throwing error to second base by Meghan Henson put the Mastodons ahead, 2-1.

A speedy WIU answer occurred in the bottom half of the frame, Halle Hollatz doubled to place two runners in scoring position with one down. Emily Ira helped her own cause with two outs by beating out a throw to first for an RBI single. Aly Compton delivered a clutch single into right center to regain the lead for Western Illinois, 3-2.

Ira (11-6) cruised in the circle for her 61st career complete game allowing one earned run on four hits with just one walk and nine strikeouts. The senior southpaw has won six consecutive starts.

Game Two (Western Illinois 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 4)

Western scored first for the seventh straight game. Lauren McConnell walked four Leatherneck hitters in a row for the contest's opening run. Shaina Eyre entered and immediately walked Hollings as the Leathernecks grabbed an early 2-0 advantage.

An inning after the Mastodons got a run back on a pair of WIU errors in the second, another Purple and Gold run crossed home plate. Hailey Duwa scored all the way from first base on a triple to the gap by Sydney Hollings.

Purdue Fort Wayne had both runners aboard in scoring position in the top of the seventh inning when Lauren Watson singled to tie the game at three runs apiece. Watson came across as the go-ahead run after a double by Lacey Wilzbacher.

Rally time was initiated by the Leathernecks in the bottom of the seventh. Danielle Olson drew a leadoff walk and Duwa reached on a fielding error on the right side of the infield. Olson scampered in from second to even the bout after a single up the middle by Hollatz. Western was down to its last out, but senior Compton drove the ball into the left centerfield gap as Duwa scored the winning run.

Abby Carlin (3-8) has won back-to-back starts after allowing three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts while going the distance.

The three-game series is scheduled to conclude on Saturday (April 27) at 1 p.m. and senior day festivities will be held before the game.
