Ira Rolls in Day One Split at UGA Classic

Emily Ira struck out 13 batters in a commanding shutout of Bowling Green before dropping game two to Elon.

ATHENS, Ga.- The Western Illinois softball team (5-8) dominated Bowling Green in a convincing 8-0 shutout before dropping the second game, 6-3 to Elon on its first day at the UGA Classic.

Game One (Western Illinois 8, Bowling Green 0)

The Leathernecks wasted little time to get on the board. With two runners on in the top of the first, Hailey Duwa punched a single up the middle to score Jasmine Lara from second. Another run came in off a Bowling Green miscue as Ashley Minyard reached on a fielder's choice followed by a throwing error from the shortstop to bring in Payton Abbott for a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 as Emily Ira cruised to nine strikeouts through just four innings. Western began to pull away in the top of the fifth after putting two runners in scoring position. Minyard delivered a single into center to score Sydney Hollings. Halle Hollatz helped manufactured a run with a sacrifice fly to right field as Kyra Kroll crossed home plate. Before the frame was done, a fielding error by the Falcons shortstop allowed Ira to reach and the Leathernecks to build a 5-0 advantage.

Western Illinois loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and Hollings drove a sacrifice fly to right field as Ealy came home after drawing a leadoff walk. Duwa put the ball in play on a groundout to tack onto the already sizeable lead and Minyard contributed another single up the middle to cap off the scoring.

Ira (3-2) racked up a total of 13 strikeouts while only allowing three hits in six innings after the game ended early due to the mercy rule.

Game Two (Elon 6, Western Illinois 3)

The Phoenix held a 2-0 edge heading into the middle of the third inning but saw the frame end in a stalemate.

Leatherneck bats were rumbling as Alyssa Ealy led things off with a triple to left field, touching home plate on the next at-bat when Lara drove a 1-0 pitch to the same location. A sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2, before Elon added a pair in the fifth and sixth.

Western plated its final run in the seventh frame on a two-out, RBI double to center field by Abbott and she was left stranded at the base to end the game.

Abby Carlin (1-4) went 4.1 innings in the circle, yielding seven hits and four runs, while Ealy, Abbott, and Lara went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Leathernecks continue play at the UGA Classic against Bowling Green (9:30 a.m.) and host Georgia (12 p.m.) on Sunday, March 10.
