Leathernecks Conclude Regular Season at SDSU

Western secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Western Illinois women's basketball team (12-17, 8-8 Summit League) concluded its regular season slate Saturday (March 2) at South Dakota State, where it dropped the decision, 100-62, to the 2018-19 regular season champions.

"I think we won a lot more battles in the second half. The first half, we just played out of sync and shot some really bad shots," said head coach JD Gravina. "We're a team that has to be aggressive, but we have to try to find that balance. There were five or six times where we just chucked up a shot, and when we got around the basket, I thought we looked scared to get blocked. We improved on those things in the second half. Of course, it got away there towards the end, but they're good. They hit shots, and if they get open shots, you just feel like it's going in."

SDSU went 5-for-5 from the field to start the game up 11-0 before Olivia Kaufmann put a halt to the stretch with a 3-pointer (7:12). She helped Western close in with another made trey at the 2:56 mark of the quarter, closing its deficit to 22-17, but it marked the closest for the rest of the game.

At halftime, the Jackrabbits entered the break with a 51-34 edge.

Kaufmann finished the evening with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds and was followed in scoring by Annabel Graettinger (15), Danni Nichols (10) and Taylor Higginbotham (10).

The Leathernecks have secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament while SDSU wrapped the season No. 1. Results around the league later in the evening will determine who WIU takes on the quarterfinals.

The Summit League Tournament returns to the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., March 9-12. Western Illinois' first-round game will take place Sunday, March 10, at 12 p.m.
