Leathernecks Topped Twice at ASU Invitational

Western Illinois has two games remaining in Montgomery, Ala.

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Western Illinois softball team (4-7) suffered another shutout loss against Tennessee Tech (5-5) and fell in 10 innings to Eastern Kentucky (7-8) on day two of the ASU Invitational Saturday (March 2).

Game One (Tennessee Tech 2, Western Illinois 0)

The Golden Eagles struck first with two runners on in the bottom of the second inning on a single up the middle by Alexis Trimiar. Sydney Love-Baker homered for the second time of the tournament for a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.

Western outhit Tennessee Tech 6-4 but did not come up with timely hits when runners were in scoring position. Ashley Minyard lined into a double play to end the Leatherneck threat in the top of the sixth.

Abby Carlin (1-3) surrendered two runs on just four hits over six innings of work with two strikeouts.

Game Two (Eastern Kentucky 4, Western Illinois 3)

The Purple and Gold fell into another 2-0 hole in game two. Sydney Bottino knotted the game by placing a single to left center as Hollatz and Ira scored in the top of the fifth.

Seven innings was not enough to decide this one as the contest remained tied heading into the ninth inning. Hailey Duwa was the automatic runner at second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Ira. Halle Hollatz doubled home Duwa to put the Leathernecks ahead, 3-2.

The Colonels quickly moved their runner to third in the bottom half of the ninth and Carly Robinson scored Sammi Miller on a single down the right field line to tie the game back up, 3-3. The Leathernecks came up empty in the top of the 10th with Eastern Kentucky seeking a walk-off. Melissa Jacobsen was placed on second to start the frame and advanced to third on a groundout. Hannah Clark delivered the walk-off single through the left side.

Emily Ira pitched the entire game allowing one earned run over 9.1 innings with one walk and eight strikeouts.

The Leathernecks conclude the ASU Invitational against Southeastern Louisiana (12 p.m.) and host Alabama State (2 p.m.) on Sunday, March 3.
