Bethune-Cookman Squeaks by WIU Twice

The Leathernecks did not get their bats going in either game of the twin-bill

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Western Illinois softball team (6-12) held Bethune-Cookman (9-21) to a pair of runs in both games but came up on the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday (March 13).

Game One (Bethune-Cookman 2, Western Illinois 0)

In a scoreless contest with runners at the corners, a double steal allowed Brianna Paysinger to swipe home for the first run. The next batter, Kaiya Epps-Lee drove in Paysinger on a single to give Bethune-Cookman a 2-0 lead.

The Leathernecks only managed three hits in the loss after Emily Ira (3-4) surrendered one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work.

Game Two (Bethune-Cookman 2, Western Illinois 1)

There was another pitcher's duel in game two, but this time Western struck first by using small-ball tactics. Alyssa Ealy led off the top of the sixth with a bunt single and promptly stole second base. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jasmine Lara and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Payton Abbott to break the stalemate.

The Wildcats answered quickly in the bottom half of the sixth on a two-run double by Paysinger to the gap in left-center to move in front, 2-1.

Kyra Kroll put together a great at-bat to draw a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning. Sidney Bottino singled to right field and the game ended as Kroll was thrown out trying to advance to third.

The Leathernecks return home to Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb for their Summit League opener against South Dakota on Saturday, March 23 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
