Leathernecks Kept Off Scoreboard

Western Illinois fell 7-0 to Tennessee Tech on day one of the ASU Invitational in Montgomery, Ala.

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Western Illinois softball team (4-5) suffered a 7-0 shutout loss to Tennessee Tech (4-5) on the opening day of the ASU Invitational Friday (March 1).

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning on a solo homer to left center by Raleigh Lewis. Two innings later, another ball left the yard off the bat of Sydney Love-Baker over the centerfield fence to put Tennessee Tech up 2-0.

Tennessee Tech loaded the bases against Savannah Rodriguez (0-1) in the top of the fifth inning. A bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch doubled the Golden Eagle advantage. Payton Abbott surrendered three runs in a relief appearance in the sixth inning.

The deficit extended to 7-0 following a TTU sacrifice fly, RBI single and RBI triple. Western Illinois was limited to four hits and committed one error.

The Leathernecks have a chance to redeem themselves against the Golden Eagles on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. first pitch against Eastern Kentucky during the second day of the tournament.
