WIU Falls 4-0 at Missouri State

Leathernecks resume play tomorrow against Creighton

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –The Western Illinois (1-2) women's tennis team dropped the first match this weekend to host Missouri State (2-0) 4-0 on friday (Feb. 8).

"I thought they (Missouri State) played really well," said head coach Mirko Bjelica.  "Although we suffered a loss I feel like our team is continuing to improve. We have a short turnaround before our match tomorrow."

The Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point and carried the momentum into singles play to take the next three singles to secure the victory, despite Mary Bjelica winning the first set 7-6 against Clara Gand-Gonzalez in the No. 4 spot.  

Laura Ballesteros was tied 3-3 in the second set of No. 5 singles, and Ana Bjelica held a 1-0 lead in second set of the No. 2 flight, but both matches were left unfinished. 

In No. 1 singles, Mia Melnizki lost 6-1 in the first set and then was retired in the second set to Alye Darter. Megan Tagaloa was the next Leatherneck retired 6-3, 6-1 by Alexia Meyer in the No. 6 spot. The Bears clinched the match after Phoebe Boeschen defeated Anouk Maajong (No. 3) 6-3, 6-1. 

The Leathernecks conclude the trip to the Show-Me state against Creighton tomorrow at 11 a.m.
