Creighton Tops Western 6-1

Leathernecks resume play on Feb. 15 against St. Ambrose

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – In her first singles match of the spring season, Camryn Rossa won her matchup as the Western Illinois women's tennis team loss 6-1 to Creighton on Saturday (Feb. 9).

"Just like yesterday,  we fought hard but it wasn't enough," said head coach Mirko Bjelica.  "We have also had some injuries that we will need to nurse this week and hopefully we will be ready to go at  it again next weekend."

The Leathernecks now sit at 1-3 this spring and the Bluejays improved to 2-3 .

Western had to battle uphill as Creighton secured the doubles point on 6-3, 6-2 wins in No.1 and 2 spots.

Rossa highlighted the final match of the weekend trip by earning her first victory of the spring season in the No. 6 singles match against Gabby O'Connor.

Sarah Wilcox gave the Bluejays a 2-0 lead after she defeated Anouk Maajong 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Ana Bjelica then fell 7-5, 6-1 in her first time competing in the No. 1 singles spot. Creighton clinched the neutral site victory after Mary Bjelica lost a hard-fought match 6-4, 6-3 in No. 3 singles to Michaela Henne.

Laura Ballesteros (No. 4) and Megan Tagaloa (No. 5) each lost their matchup in one set because the overall match had been decided already.

Four in-state teams will serve as the Leathernecks' final test before the start of Summit League play as the Purple & Gold travels to St. Ambrose (Feb. 15), Bradley (Feb, 23), Quincy (March 1) and Illinois State (March 2).
