Summit Hoops Opener

A Summit Opener | The journey to the Summit League title begins with South Dakota, and Western Illinois will see both its women's (2 p.m.) and men's (4:30 p.m.) programs in action on December 29. The game marks the first of four league doubleheaders before the season culminates at the 2020 tournament (March 7-10) in Sioux Falls, S.D. 

Last Time Out | Western Illinois concluded non-league play at the second-ever Compass Challenge, which featured directional in-state schools - Southern, Eastern, Western, and host Northern.

The Leathernecks fell to SIU (65-79) and EIU (52-60). Evan Zars highlighted the tourney as the forward recorded a double-double (13 points &10 rebounds) against the Salukis and was named to the all-tournament team.

Road to 1K | Only five games into her senior season, Olivia Kaufmann has totaled a team-leading 214 points en route to chasing down membership into the 1,000 point club. She is 43 points away from becoming the 19th Leatherneck to achieve the mark. She would join three of her former teammates who achieved the honor - Morgan Blumer (1,000), Emily Clemens (1,699) and Taylor Higginbotham (1,806).

Scouting South Dakota | Picked to finish first in the Summit League preseason poll, the Coyotes cracked the AP Poll at No. 25 on Dec. 16. South Dakota's two lone losses came to the hands of #22 Missouri State and #6 South Carolina. Last season, USD earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first Summit League team, by the league's current name, to get an at-large bid.
