Last-Minute Goal Settles Leathernecks’ Non-Conference Finale

Bradley scored with less than 30 seconds remaining to walk away with the 2-1 win.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois' men's soccer team had one last game inside John MacKenzie Alumni Field Monday (Nov. 4), and it was a down to the wire finish. Less than 30 seconds separated the Leathernecks and Bradley from an extra period, and visitors walked away with the 2-1 victory on a last-minute attempt.

"We had a good first half but didn't sustain it in the second," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Bradley beat us to the majority of the 50/50 balls in the second half and you can't win if you don't fight and win those battles."

As always, Ryan DeBois was Ryan DeBois, and it took 10 minutes for the Leathernecks' leading goal scorer to tab No. 7 on the season. His lone shot was on frame for the 1-0 advantage, and the score sat in Western's favor until the Braves evened things on a corner kick in the 58th minute.

Bradley narrowly outshot the Leathernecks, 8-7, in the second half, and the nail bitter occurred after a pair of quick passes to Gerit Wintermeyer at 89:37.

Goalkeeper Tim Trilk finished the afternoon with four saves and tried to force overtime on a rocket from just beyond the penalty box. The shot fell in the hands of the Bradley keeper, and an offsides call effectively ended the game.

Western returns to Summit League play at Oral Roberts Saturday (Nov. 9) before road-tripping to Denver, Colo., for The Summit League Tournament (Nov. 14-16).
