Volleyball Inks Five

WIU volleyball adds five distinguished athletes to the 2020 roster.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois volleyball saw five athletes sign to join the 2020 roster Thursday (Nov. 21), including Helania Hillyard, Isabella Biesterfeld, Kaitlyn Morgan, Erin Rosdahl, and Ashley Poland.

"Helania has an abundance of athletic potential, and her accolades in multiple sports speak for themselves," said head coach Ben Staupe. "She had a very successful high school career and which will help her in competing at a high level. Her quickness and athletic presence on the floor will be a good fit for our program."

The Mediapolis High School senior is a three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, and track.
Hillyard started all four years in both volleyball and basketball and making two state appearances in track and field highlighted by a 10th place high jump performance and a seventh-place finish in the 4x400 relay. The 5'11 middle/outside hitter was recognized as First Team All-Hawkeye and Conference Player of the Year her senior season.

"Isabella comes in to help solidify depth at the pins. We are excited about her Potential and looking forward to seeing her grow in our program." 

The Crete, Ill. Native, Biesterfeld, a three-sport athlete for Illinois Lutheran High School participating in softball, basketball, and volleyball. The outside hitter stands at 6'1 and has received AVCA Under Armor All-Region and Conference Player of the Year, as well as conference recognition in softball and basketball. The senior recently notched her 1,000 kills in her high school career, holding the ILHS single-season and career records for kills. Academically she ranks third in her class while earning honor roll all six semesters thus far.

"Caitlin comes from a successful high school program. That background matched with her work ethic and drive will help the program grow. She physically will also add some height and power to the pins."

The Pleasant Valley High School senior has seen two conference championships and a third-place state finish during her four years. The 6'2 outside/rightside hitter has earned second-team all-conference honors. Morgan is from LeClaire, Iowa.

"Erin will help solidify the middle position for the Leathernecks. Her lateral movement quickness and eagerness to learn will help her progress in her college career."

Rosdahl hails from Northbrook, Ill. where she has earned a 4.3 GPA at Glenbrook North High School. The 6'0 middle hitter comes off a senior season with a 0.441 hitting percentage on 184 kills earning MVP, All-Conference, and Scholar-Athlete honors.

"Ashley has great vision and ball control. She will bring excitement and energy into the gym every day."

As a defensive specialist, Poland has earned over 1,500 digs in her career at Hoffman Estates High School after becoming the first freshman to notch over 500 digs. The Hanover Park, Ill. native, has earned four-time All-Conference and three-time All-Area honors. As a captain of her high school team, she is also a member of the National Honors Society.
