Late Drake Push Lifts Bulldogs Over Western

The Leathernecks chipped away all game but fell 94-75 on Sunday (Nov. 24).

DES MOINES, Iowa - Western Illinois women's basketball chipped away all night but couldn't erase the 20 point advantage Drake owned in the second quarter in 94-75 loss on Sunday (Nov. 24).

Danni Nichols cut the Drake lead to nine after a full-court sprint for a layup at 5:37 in the fourth quarter to make it 73-64 in a season-high 17 points. Ranked No. 3 in the Mid-Major Poll and receiving votes in both the Associated Press Poll and USA Today/ WBCA Coaches Poll, Drake responded on a 16-3 run to shut the door on the late WIU push.

Evan Zars grabbed down four offensive rebounds in the first quarter to set up a three-pointer by Annabel Graettinger at 6:16 to tie it 8-8. Zars hit a driving layup to make it a one-point game and scrambled to the other side of the court to swat a Drake shot. The forward finished with 17 total boards, three away from a career-high.

With time counting down in the second quarter Elizabeth Lutz followed her miss shot and kicked it out to Avery Hamm for a trifecta to make it 49-34 Drake heading into the half.

Olivia Kaufmann (20) and Annabel Graettinger (17) each notched their sixth double-digit scoring game of the 2019-20 season.

Western Illinois returns home to host Elementary Day against Missouri Baptist Tuesday (Nov. 26) at 11 a.m., where over 1,000 elementary students will cheer on the Leathernecks inside Western Hall. Admission is free for all fans, so take an extended lunch, bring a friend, coworker, or your whole staff and cheer on WIU. We'll also be attempting to break a world record for the most number of people flossing (the dance) at one time.
