The Journey Ends in Overtime

Western Illinois dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Omaha 3-2.

DENVER - Resiliency describes the Western Illinois men's soccer team for the 2019 season. Doubted before the season and in the middle, the Leathernecks never stopped to earn a share of the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in postseason play.

The journey came to an end in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in the 93rd minute of overtime to the No. 4 Omaha Mavericks in The Summit League Championships presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare on Thursday (Nov. 14).

WIU had to play with ten men the rest of the game following a straight red card in the 41st minute.

The postseason opener intensified after both sides were deadlocked 2-2 and went into overtime. Omaha scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute.

A Maverick handball in the box at the 54th-minute setup Daisuke Otsuka to approach the penalty spot. The member of the All-Newcomer team, converted successfully to tie it 1-1.

Once again, Otsuka (74') found the back of the net in a crucial moment. After his first shot was saved, Arian Mehrang secured the rebound and quickly played to Otsuka, who chipped in his second goal of the game.

Omaha jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute with possession in the box found Junior Noutoua for the goal who subbed in a minute prior. The Mavericks added to the dramatics and tied it 2-2 in the 79th minute.

In the first half, Luke Duball and Mehrang nearly gave WIU an early lead, but both shots just went right of the net.

Tim Trilk earned his first of seven saves in the 20th minute to keep it scoreless. The senior concludes his career to end with program marks for fourth in minutes in goal (4733:13), eighth in career saves (205), tied sixth in shutouts (8), and ninth in wins (14)

The program earned three First Team and All-Newcomer selections as well as one Second Team honoree along with Paul Kirdorf named Defensive Player of the Year and Dr. Eric Johnson Co-Coach of the Year to highlight the 2019 campaign.

For Gimale Essacu, Thomas Hollis, Christian Junna, and Trilk, the outing marked the final time they will wear the Purple and Gold. All that can be said is thank you for everything.

Western Illinois concludes the season overall at 5-13-1 and a 4-1 mark in Summit League play.
